How to Find a New Job

How to Find a New Job

Finding a new job is stressful and can make you very anxious. But whether you are starting your search for a new job while still employed or have quit and are now looking, the process is the same. As recruiters, we always recommend that people find a new position while still employed. However, 4.3 million people quit their jobs in August, the highest monthly total since they started tracking in 2000. As someone considering their next role, you need to figure out what you are looking for in your new job. It is easy to say “I don’t want this job” but figuring out what you are looking for can be challenging. We have a few tips for figuring out what your next commercial real estate job should be.

Look critically at your current job responsibilities

You know that your current role is not what you are looking for anymore. But before you throw in the towel on the entire job, you should take a long, hard look at it. What do you like about your current job? What would you eliminate if you could? By looking closely at your job responsibilities, you can help figure out what type of commercial real estate job you are looking for. Thinking critically about the parts you like and parts you would eliminate in your next role can help you decide if you are on the right career path. Maybe you took a chance on your last promotion and discovered the new area is not for you. By thinking closely about the job responsibilities you like and want to see in your next role, you will be ready for the recruiter to ask “Where do you see yourself?”

Look critically at your current company

Maybe the problem is not your job responsibilities as much as the current company you are working for. Many companies tried to be supportive of their workers over the last 18 months, but that support might not feel right for you. Again, think about what you like about the current company and what you would change if you could. Maybe it is a small company with nowhere for you to grow within the firm. Maybe you joined a firm and the job has taken a different direction than you thought it would. Whatever the case, knowing what you want in your next employer will help you find the next step in your career.

Look critically at your life

The pandemic shifted many parts of the work/life balance for people across the country. Covid disrupted work, school, elder care and more for many families. Many employers initially provided a lot of flexibility in the new work/life balance. The initial push for remote or hybrid work, with flexibility on hours has vanished for some companies. Many smaller firms have even reverted to pre-pandemic expectations of working hours and where the work should be performed. Think about what kind of a work/life balance you would like in your next job. Maybe you would be happy with a hybrid work situation. Or maybe you need to be fully remote to help care for your family. Maybe you would prefer a full-time return to office to re-establish the boundaries between work and home life.
